Amazing Augsburg

We are both really sorry not to have longer in this lovely and fascinating little city. However a delayed arrival and most of the following morning spent in a queue at the DB Reisenzentrum meant our visit was sadly truncated.

Our hotel was a little tired but also proportionatley priced. It was in a building of historic significance (= no lift and us on the top floor) around the Fuggerei, the oldest still opperating social housing project, founded in 1521.  Residents stll pay only 88 cents per year for their unit/appartment (plus utilities) but do have to agree to saying three prayers each day including one for the founder.

REALLY good lunch at Die Taffeldecker, the restaurant in the Fuggerei museum we didn't have time to visit! Guess what Matt had?  (I know, you all got 100 points for guessing the local beer and some sort of sausage - but I stole some of his chippies, they were yum). I had a smoked duck salad and a glass of rose.  Three of my favourite things (Duck, Rose wine, and Matt's chips).

Next up was a walk around the town and the markets as well as time to see a few reproductions of Roman sculputres on public display. The markets were very much a local concern and got very busy with a post-work crowd as the dark closed in. The first music I'd heard that wasn't "pop" Christmas songs - I heard lovely brass versions of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen and Oh Tannenbaum. Oh and much to my surprise, we found a brewery to visit!

Next morning was time for a short view of several canals, the original moat, and the original town defences. The engineering history with canals and water towers recorded as far back as the 13th centurary and drinking water and dirty water seperated by 1545 is just amazing.

Sadly a short stay made shorter by circumstances, certainly a city well worth a couple of days.
